How does neuroplasticity work?

1 min read

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change, adapt, and rewire itself by forming new neural connections throughout life.

At a basic level, the brain works through networks of neurons that communicate with each other. Every thought, behaviour, or experience strengthens certain pathways. The more a pathway is used, the stronger it becomes—this is often summarised as “neurons that fire together, wire together.”

Neuroplasticity works through two key processes: strengthening helpful pathways and weakening unhelpful ones. This is sometimes described as “pruning” old connections and reinforcing new ones. When you repeatedly think, feel, or act in a certain way, the brain makes that pathway more automatic over time.

For example, if the brain has learned to associate certain sensations or situations with danger, it may create overprotective responses such as pain, fatigue, or anxiety. Through neuroplasticity, these patterns can be gradually retrained by introducing new, safer experiences and reinforcing them consistently.

This is where intentional practice becomes important. Techniques such as visualization, somatic exercises, mindfulness, and pattern interruption help create new neural pathways. With repetition, these new patterns can begin to replace older, less helpful ones.

At re-origin, we use self-directed neuroplasticity tools designed to help you actively retrain your brain. By consistently practicing these techniques, you can support emotional regulation, reduce stress responses, and shift the brain toward more adaptive and balanced patterns.

It’s important to understand that neuroplasticity is not instant—it requires repetition, consistency, and patience. However, the brain remains capable of change throughout life, meaning meaningful improvements are possible over time.

How long does it take for neuroplasticity to work?

It varies from person to person. Some people notice small shifts within weeks, while deeper changes typically develop over months of consistent practice.

Can neuroplasticity help with chronic symptoms?

Yes, neuroplasticity-based approaches are often used to address chronic conditions by retraining the brain’s response patterns and reducing overprotective signals.
